Bath and Body Works’ Best Fragrance Yet

I’ve been a loyal BBW customer for years, but while I would browse through the floral and fruity perfumes, my mind would always go to a certain candle, called Mahogany Teakwood. That’s what I always wanted to smell like: woody, musky, and androgynous, rather than the typical sugary sweetness of many of their fragrances. But sadly, that one scent wasn’t offered as a fragrance, just as a candle. So I would sigh longingly and just buy something else, wishing the whole time that they would just make that candle into a body mist for pete’s sake. And apparently I wasn’t the only one who was obsessed with that candle’s unique scent: due to customer requests, BBW decided this summer to release Mahogany Teakwood as a fragrance at long last!

When I found this, I wasn’t initially aware that BBW had finally released Mahogany Teakwood in fragrance form. I was checking out some Eucalyptus Spearmint perfumes ( another great scent) when I saw the display of these, sitting seductively by the register. I heard the angels singing as I bought four bottles, as excited as a kid in a candy store. Guys…this is my new favorite fragrance, and I’ll tell you why.

It’s different. It’s unique. It’s not what most women smell like; it’s actually marketed as a unisex scent, and I agree wholeheartedly with that description. It’s very masculine. But as someone who prefers men’s colognes over generic women’s scents, this one is a gem. It opens with a very clean, fresh scent, almost soapy, and then it mellows into a woody, piney, musky middle, highlighted with lavender and geranium. The base is pure mahogany balanced with musk. It’s unlike anything BBW has come out with in the past, but it’s a much more magnetic scent than anything I’ve owned by them before. Every time I wear Mahogany Teakwood, I get stopped and people ask to smell me. Seriously. Two women told me I smelled like a sexy man; someone described the scent as comforting, while another called it the perfect unisex perfume. And I agree. This is scent for someone who’s not afraid to be a little gender-bending and a little mysterious; it’s a sexy scent but not in an obnoxious way. In a word, it’s perfect.

Review: LA Girl Flat Finish Pigment Gloss

Happy Saturday, bros! Today I have a review and lip swatches of the new LA Girl matte liquid lipsticks to share with you. In a nutshell, these are affordable, yet pigmented and fun for summer.

I picked up the shades Bazaar, Obsess, Instinct, Frisky, Secret, Backstage, and Black Currant.

As you can see, some of them swatch a lot better than the others! The darker shades were definitely a little harder to work with. Still, they’re all beautiful colors. I also did lots of derpy lip swatches!

First, here’s the color Bazaar. It ended up being one of my favorites because it’s work-appropriate yet still fun. It’s a peachy pink shade that went on really smoothly.

Second we have the color Obsess. It’s a hot coral shade that’s perfect for summer! I loved this one as well, both for its great pigmentation and its smooth application.

Third up is Instinct. Y’all know I love a bright orange lip, and this one fits the bill nicely!

Fourth is Frisky, a classic red shade. I liked this one, but it still won’t replace my HG red, Wet n Wild’s Megalast Liquid Lipstick!

Fifth we have the shade Secret, a close dupe for Lime Crime’s Wicked. Now, as I moved into the darker shades, I noticed that they went on more patchily and were much harder to work with than the first four. Definitely requires a precise application. Anyway, Secret is a deep burgundy shade.

Sixth is Backstage, a dark plum shade that was also a bit hard to apply, but I still like the color.

And lastly is Black Currant. This one swatched badly on my arm, but on my lips it was fine. It is a super dark blackened purple that reminds me of MAC’s Cyber.

Needless to say, my lips were sore after all that swatching! These do NOT come off easily, which is a good thing! I actually liked these a lot. I personally love a good flat finish lipstick, and these meet that requirement amply. My favorite shades were Bazaar, Obsess, Instinct, and Black Currant. They were all richly pigmented and went on smoothly, and I noticed that they all made my green eyes pop more as well. There are none of these that I wouldn’t recommend, but I will say that Secret and Backstage are definitely the most difficult to apply. Overall, I think these are an affordable way to get into the liquid lipstick trend, and I think these will appeal to both beginners and makeup pros alike.

Julep Sweepstakes Contest

Hey, kittens! Recently I was contacted by Abbey from Julep, asking me to tell my lovely readers all about a new sweepstakes they were sponsoring in honor of New York Fashion Week! ( And no, this isn’t a sponsored post; I didn’t receive a thing for writing this.)  The grand prize winner of the contest will receive a trip for two to the New York Fashion week, plus a $5,000 shopping spree, plus a $500 Uber credit. To enter, you just follow this link:

The  sweepstakes will end on June 30, so if you want to enter, go ahead!

To participate in this “sweepstakes reveal,” so to speak, I was asked to tell you ladies about it, and then create a colorboard, or simply describe, my dream shade of Julep polish.  So here goes…

I really like teal nail polish,  but sometimes they look too flat. So, my custom teal color would be a blend of…

…this eye-catching turquoise tint, and…

..the depth of this shade of teal, and with the shimmering iridescence of a black pearl…

…which would go gorgeously with Illamasqua Apocalips, another beautiful teal! imageimage

Okay, I might have gotten a little over eager with the teal…Anyway, that’s my dream color! Feel free to enter the contest if you want to!

Is Kat Von D Lock-it Tattoo foundation in Light 42 coming back?!

Look at what I found on the Sephora website! True, it says out of stock, but usually it isn’t even listed at all! I could be wrong, but it looks like they are bringing back the shade Light 42. I know a lot of pale girls were devastated when this was discontinued, but now, maybe it’s safe to get your hopes up…

The Spring Beauty Tag

Hey there kittens! I got tagged for the Spring Beauty Tag by! To participate, all you have to do is answer a few questions about your Spring beauty habits.
1. Do you change your makeup for Spring? If so, how?
I like wearing something a little lighter since the weather is warmer. During the colder months, I’m all about full-coverage pale foundations, but now I’m moving into the BB creams and powder route! My favorite BB cream for Spring is definitely Ponds Luminous Finish in Light. It is, in my humble opinion, the best drugstore BB cream available right now–it’s lightweight and hydrating, but it also provides really good coverage and fades those pesky dark spots. If I need a little more coverage, I’ll use my Lorac Porefection Baked Powder, which has salicylic acid in it to keep my oily skin under control–a necessity for the Spring. We all like glowy skin, but no one wants to be shiny.

Also, I like wearing more orange lipstick in the Spring. It’s young and fun, but still edgy. One of my favorites is from the Maybelline Vivids line, called Vibrant Mandarin. It’s one of the more unique colors at the drugstore, a creamy red-orange with a teeny bit of pink.

Just a swipe of it plus some mascara and you’re done! Needless to say, I will be using my Nars Matte Multiple pretty often too!
2.  What is your favorite Spring fragrance?

I liberally douse myself with Bath and Body Works Oahu Coconut Sunset every morning. It’s a hybrid of my two favorite fragrance notes, coconut and amber. It is warm and exotic smelling, and people always tell me I smell good when I wear it. Also, I like Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue as a Spring fragrance; it may be one of those perfumes that everybody wears, but hey, it’s popular for a reason.
3. What is going to be your favorite accessory this Spring?
Hmm…probably sunglasses. I am fond of wearing large, dorky sunglasses. I also love necklaces with an ethnic vibe.

4. What is going to be your most worn item of clothing this Spring?
As soon as it gets warm, I head straight to my floral babydoll dresses. They’re cool and are easy to dress up or down. Throw on boots and a beanie and you’re insta-grunge, or pile on the necklaces and mess up your hair and be hippie-chic.
5. Top three favorite Spring nail polishes?
I tend not to wear the traditional Spring shades. I like my polishes to make more of a statement, and right now I’m loving my Revlon Leather polish, which is a black color that’s got a textured, “leather” finish, and two nail polishes I actually got at Forever 21–the cool teal called Jelly Bean and the classic red called Sangria.

6.  Do you prefer pumps or sandals for Spring?
Pumps? Yeah right. Watching me stagger around in high heels would ruin my street cred. =P For me, it’s going to be my studded boots. Not very Springy, but they add some toughness to an otherwise pretty look. Either that or barefoot.
7.  Favorite Spring jacket?

I am pretty much never seen without my trusty faux leather motorcycle jacket (although it MUST be fake leather or I will not wear it. NO real leather or real fur for me.) I think a punky leather jacket is the perfect way to add some edge to the typical flowery dresses of Spring, plus it’s good for when the sun goes down and it’s still a bit chilly outside.
8. What is your favorite flower?
It may be a little clichéd, but roses have always been my favorite flower. I don’t know if that’s because of my Beauty and the Beast obsession when I was little, or because it’s the symbol of the Tudor monarchs (hey, I’m a history nerd!), but to me, roses are the classic example of Nature’s most beautiful flower. If I’m ever brave enough to get a tattoo, one of them will be a blue rose. Has anyone read The Glass Menagerie? With the “Blue Roses” joke? Got the idea from there…

So those are all the questions. I’m going to tag..,,,,,, and And really, anyone else can do it too!

The Liebster Award Part 2

I cannot believe it. In just one month of blogging, I have been nominated three times for a Liebster Award! Let me just say, I am excited, grateful, and so touched that you guys like my blog enough to nominate me several times for this award. I think that the Liebster Award tag is a great way for newer bloggers to establish themselves and gain more followers, and I also think the Liebster Award tag is important because it creates a sense of community among all us bloggers. So, I would like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to Lizzie Lee from and Abby from! Please go check out their blogs. They are both genuine, amusing, and helpful bloggers, so go share the love! One thing I want to say: I know I have been nominated for this award before, but I think it would be rude not to acknowledge the bloggers who kindly nominated me, and also doing it again is a great chance for me to nominate eleven more deserving bloggers and help them out!

A few quick rules you must follow to participate:
1. Acknowledge the blogger who nominated you and display the award.

2. Answer eleven questions that the blogger gives you.

3. Give eleven random facts about yourself–they can be anything!

4. Nominate eleven blogs that you think are deserving of the award (but they must have less than 200 followers)

5. Let the bloggers know you nominated them.

6. Give them eleven questions to answer.

Now, because they both nominated me, I’m going to answer some of both sets of questions! From Lizzie Lee:
1. Is this your first foray into the world of blogging? Yes, it is. I’m not a very tech-savvy person, but I’ve wanted to have my own blog for years. I had no idea it would be so much fun to have a blog, and learning a little bit of computer code is always cool.

2. Do you have any pets? Oh yes! I have two little kittens named Ather and Bella. They are mischievous best friends and sisters, and I can always count on them to jump onto the kitchen table and steal my pancakes, then look up at me with their adorable kitten eyes…who in the world could get angry with such cute faces? I also have a dog named Toby and a turtle named Parlay. I love animals.

3. What’s your Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality type? Great question. I actually just took the MBTI test, and I’m an INFJ, which is the rarest personality type, shared by only 1-3% of the whole population. It means I am introverted, intuitive, and creative, but with a keen sense of justice and a desire to improve the world; also, that I’m a radical loner who can be moody at times. Some famous INFJ’s are Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

4. How extensively do you research something before buying it? How large or small of a role does branding and packaging play in your decision to purchase a product? Oh gosh…before I buy anything, I go online and read as many reviews as I can find, and that’s saved me a lot of money in the long run. I think my obsession with reading other peoples’ reviews led to my wanting to start a blog…as far as packaging goes, I’m usually not a sucker for packaging. I would prefer a quality product over cutesy packaging, and the only time I’ve ever been a big fan of packaging was with Forever 21’s new line–for some reason, I just love their minimalist-chic black boxes and tubes!

5. Do you prefer neutrals or bright colors? Honeys, I am NOT a neutral person. I always gravitate towards the brightest colors; I love taking fashion risks with neon tights and pop art dresses. I think everyone should stray away from basic browns and grays and try to work some color into their lives. The only neutral color I wear is black, and then I like to do black monochrome outfits: a throwback to my goth/emo days, I guess!

And now, my questions from Abby:

6. Where are you from? Originally, I’m from Charleston, SC, the land of marshes and mosquitoes!

7. Which is your favorite season? It’s a tie between spring and fall, of course. I love the flowers and clean air of spring, and the golden-amber leaves and bonfires of fall.

8. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? I would love to go to England, France, Germany, India, New Zealand, and Japan…it would be hard to pick one! I’ll go with England or Japan, because I love English and Japanese history the most.

9. Favorite brand of makeup? From the drugstores, I love NYX and Revlon. From high-end brands, I love Kat Von D, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, and Nars.

10. Do you play an instrument? I play guitar, electric and acoustic. As John Lennon would say, “And sometimes I play the fool.”

11. What is your favorite quote? One of my favorites is “We are the masters of our unspoken words, and the slave to words which should have remained unspoken.” Think before you speak!

I’m not going to do the eleven random facts, just because I did them so recently and don’t want to seem like a blog-attention-hog.

Now, my new questions for my nominees:
1. How many languages do you speak?
2. Do you have any piercings or tattoos?
3. If you could meet an historical figure, who would it be and why?
4. Who is your style inspiration?
5. Favorite TV show?
6. Girl crush?
7. Number one beauty product?
8. What are some of your other interests?
9. Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor?
10. Best book you’ve ever read?
11. If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

I nominate:

And for honorable mention…Even though she has more than 200 followers, I wanted to tag as well, because I love her blog and I wanted her to know it!
